Summer Logic – a safety feature designed to help reduce your water temperature.
It is no surprise that we are having another hot summer in North Texas. Looking at the temperature history and forecast for McKinney National Airport it is just the norm for Collin County and surrounding areas. What is one to do with a hot tub when it is hot? Sundance Spas has an answer for that called Summer Logic mode.
Summer Logic occurs when the actual water temperature of the tub exceeds 95 degrees Fahrenheit and is 2 degrees above the set temperature. This is a safety feature that cannot be altered, but it is designed to help reduce the temperature of the water. If the conditions are met, the programmed pump circulation is reduced to just two 3-hour cycles per day. This helps to reduce excess heat being added to water through friction and running the circulation pump just enough to keep the water clean. It won’t cool the water, but hopefully keep from contributing any additional heat.
If you do find that the water needs a little extra circulation, you can either change the set temperature to the actual water temperature or look at ways to reduce the actual water temperature to a more desirable range, so it does not revert to Summer Logic. Sundance Spas are very well insulated and are designed to retain as much heat as possible. This makes for very energy efficient heating in the wintertime, but that may not be wanted come summer. Some ways to reduce the water temperature:
- Provide Shade – If the hot tub is sitting in full sun for 12+ hours a day, eventually that energy will be absorbed. If you can provide shade with landscaping, an arbor, or perhaps the placement of the tub this will reduce the amount of heat. Like parking your car in the shade, it won’t be as hot when you get in it.
- Let the Heat Out – Sticking with the car analogy, if you crack the windows, it lets the excess heat out. If you open the cover when the air is cooler, this will give the heat a chance to escape. It is important to note that you want to do this when you are able to watch the hot tub to make sure there aren’t any children that might get into the uncovered tub or a large amount of debris blowing into the tub. Excess sunlight can also cause algae growth. If the cover is left open frequently this may result in extra cleaning and chemicals needed to maintain the water.
- Cool the Water – Because the tub is so energy efficient, it also keeps the cold in longer. By adding or replacing the water with cooler water, this will reduce the actual water temperature. This is only temporary and eventually it will warm back up to the ambient temperature. Ice can also be used to accomplish this, but keep in mind there are several hundreds of gallons of water in the tub. It will take a lot of ice to make a difference. For example, a 400-gallon hot tub would take roughly 88 pounds of ice to go from 95 degrees to 90 degrees. Again, that is only temporary.
Hopefully this explains what happens to your Sundance Spa in the heat of the summer and how Summer Logic affects the existing programming. If you need any further assistance with making your hot tub not so hot this summer, please give us a call at 469-250-2226.
